About Our Organization

Destination: Jersey City is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to communicating the outstanding value and appeal of Jersey City’s premier attractions, restaurants, hotels and historic sites to local, regional, national and international tourism markets.

Destination: Jersey City began in 2000 as a grassroots effort to improve local signage to help guide visitors around the city. The group quickly expanded from 9 to more than 30 organizations from the educational, cultural, nonprofit, healthcare, corporate, business and local government sectors. The Hillier Group, an international design and architectural firm, was retained to “brand” the project and design signage elements.

Largest Vehicular Wayfinding Project in the Nation

Through a New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) “Centers of Place” grant, Destination: Jersey City provided oversight for the construction and installation of the largest signage installation program in the United States, with more than 500 signs designed to complement Jersey City's historical palette. The elevated, easily-visible signs direct visitors to important tourism assets such as the Statue of Liberty, the Waterfront area, the African-American Museum, and Jersey City’s many parks, including Liberty State Park. The program has been lauded as a model for other cities throughout New Jersey.

DestinationJerseyCity.com Web Site

In the second phase of this effort, members of Destination: Jersey City are highlighting the city's cultural assets and attractions through the DestinationJerseyCity.com Web site, created by JK Design. This sophisticated, interactive site offers an easy-to-use mapping system; a dynamic trip planner; an in-depth listing of events, businesses, activities and locations of interest to visitors and residents; and an opportunity for local businesses to build more traffic through targeted online advertising and other exciting new resources. Pedestrian Signage

The third and final phase of work under the NJDOT “Centers of Place” grant is installing pedestrian signs to guide visitors from transportation hubs to nearby businesses and sites of interest. As the PATH trains and the Hudson Bergen Light Rail offer easy and convenient transportation to Jersey City from Newark, New York City and other areas throughout the region, the large, three-sided signs give all visitors—whether traveling on foot or in a vehicle—an easy way to find their way around Jersey City and visit its many attractions.
